The October 21st NYSCEA delegate meeting explored the Common Core Standards from all content and support perspectives.  Dr. Larry Paska, Interim Director for Curriculum and Instruction, presented an in-depth overview of the 12 shifts represented in the ELA and Math Common Core State Standards.

♦ PARCC Work on K-12 Assessments Continues

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a 24-state consortium working together to develop next-generation K-12 assessments in English and Math. The assessment design includes a shift from four to two summative components and the inclusion of teacher delivered diagnostic assessments in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition, PARCC assessments will be computer based to drive innovation and quicker turnaround of performance data.  To learn about the latest activities of PARCC, visit www.parcconline.org.

DR. John KING BECOMES COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION

 

The New York State Board of Regents has voted to elect Dr. John B. King, Jr. as New York State Education Commissioner and President of the University of the State of New York. He is an excellent choice for the position, having served the Education Department as Senior Deputy Commissioner for P-12 Education, where he led the implementation of every aspect of New York State's current reform agenda. During his tenure at the Department of Education, Dr. King has earned the highest respect from teachers, school leaders, superintendents and policy makers. He is respected for his results-oriented leadership and his ability to lead diverse stakeholders to consensus around critical reforms for our public schools.

 

In accepting the position Dr. King said, "There has never been a more exciting time to be in public education in New York… Over the past two years I have been struck by the commitment of school board members, superintendents, school leaders, and teachers from every part of this state to push forward and implement bold reforms that will mean better schools for all of our kids... I am committed to ensuring that the State Education Department will work in close partnership with districts and individual schools to capitalize on that commitment and fully implement meaningful, lasting change," said King.

COMMON CORE DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS


As efforts proceed to align NYS Education Standards with the Common Core State Standards, the NYS Education Department has released new information and tools related to these efforts including a timeline for phased implementation of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, a sample of the Common Core State Standards resources suggested by the Council of Chief State School Officers, and a link to the "Bringing the Common Core to Life" Webinar featuring a talk with David Coleman, one of the authors of the Common Core State Standards.  http://usny.nysed.gov/rttt/resources/bringing-the-common-core-to-life.html

 

We are beginning the process of generating a full menu of Common Core aligned

curriculum – across content area and grades. Newly appointed Commissioner, Dr. John King, has asked educators across

the state to share the work they have done to align units and lesson plans with the Common Core.  Please e-mail aligned units, lesson plans, materials, samples of student work no later than close of business on June 1, 2011 to emscurric@mail.nysed.gov
