NYSCEA members:

As the 2011-2012 school year gets underway, it’s hard to believe that our delegate meeting is only a month away.  It's been a very active summer for the New York State Council of Educational Associations, and I'm anxious to share with you initiatives that have been underway.  Over the summer, the Executive Board has met informally; a committee has been actively working on potential revisions and updates to the NYSCEA Constitution, and a subcommittee has been working on establishing a standard for ethical and professional behavior for our Association.  We have had representatives attend the NYSED network training on Common Core standards and APPR in August, the second summit on blended Learning in New York State and the workgroup to refine the New York State course offerings catalog.  In addition, we have been in conversation with a number of associations who are considering membership as part of our council. To avoid sending a lengthy communication, I will send a series of three communications over the next few days, each focused on a major topic.

In this first communication, I'll focus on our planned program for the October 21st NYSCEA delegate meeting.  Our topic will be exploring the Common Core standards from all content and support perspectives.  As we discussed last spring, I am making every effort to ensure that our delegate meetings are not a day spent simply passively absorbing reports, but are in fact, workshops that provide information, allow opportunity to process and network, and result in tangible deliverables to take back to our respective association members.  Toward that end, we will begin with an in-depth overview of the 12 shifts represented in both the ELA and math Common Core state standards.  Larry Paska, SED Interim Director for Curriculum and Instruction, will be presenting the overview and he will be contacting you this week with a few questions that will help him tailor the information he presents to our council’s specific needs.

This will be followed by a panel made up of NYSCEA representatives who attended the summer network training on this topic and SED officials who will share some of what they learned and what they took away from the training.

The day will conclude with workgroups examining the impact of the standards on various aspects of the educational process, of how associations are responding to and/or incorporating the Common Core standards into their mission, as well as identifying what additional information    and/or support is needed by the field in order to achieve the intended outcome of the standards.

Please share with me any thoughts and suggestions you might have regarding our topic or the agenda for the day to assist in our planning efforts.

 Thanks,

 Dave
