From the President – January 26, 2015
I just heard on the Today Show that spring is only 54 days away. I am sure that the forecast for the next two days makes all of us yearn for spring coming. I know the dogs and I will be very happy when we can walk outside without sliding about.
Our February NYSCEA Meeting is only a week away. The agenda is pretty well finalized and attached to this email. Our meeting will begin with Dr. Julia Rafal-Baer, Ph.D., who will present a session entitled “Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness to Address Student and Talent Management Needs”. She has provided me with a description of the presentation as well as some material for preview by delegates. You will find this information attached.
Federal Legislative Issues will be another topic of discussion. I am sure many of you are aware that the reauthorization of ESEA/NCLB is a focus by both Democrats and Republicans during this congressional session since it has not been reauthorized for 11 years. New York has two congressional representatives on the Education and Workforce Committee. They are Elise Stefanik, R- 21st District ; and Hakeem Jeffries, D- 8th District. Sub-Committees have not yet been determined.
The meeting will be rounded out with an example of close reading from the NTI training and some group work on the NYSCEA website, Mental Health/Pupil Personnel Services, and Legislative Issues. President Elect Marc Greene will spend some time working on a strategic plan for NYSCEA’s future.
In the near future, Past President Dave Arnone and I will be making some visits to NYS Legislative Offices. In preparation for these visits, we would request that all associations update their Association Template. If you recall, a few years back we did this so we would have information close at hand to provide contacts when legislators or offices called us with questions. I have attached a sample form from the New York State Reading Association as well as a blank template. I would appreciate it if a member of your association could update this and provide an electronic copy to me by February 6, 2015. My correct email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you in advance for taking care of this.
If you have not yet made your reservation for this meeting , please do so soon. Reservations for rooms at the Century House can be made by calling 518 785 0931 or 1(888)67HOUSE on or before January 21, 2015, the deadline date for our block. Please contact our executive manager, Laura LaFontaine at email@example.com regarding your attendance on or before January 27, 2015. The fee for each individual meeting is $75.00 this year. You can register by contacting Laura LaFontaine and forwarding your check to her prior to the meeting.
There are six attachments with this letter. The treasurer’s report is among them. I thank Sue Hildebrandt for putting this together for us in advance of the meeting. Please remember to bring copies of any of these materials with you. As we continue to “go green”, Laura will only have a limited supply of print copies available.
Well as I sign off, the weather forecasters continue to speak of the Blizzard of 2015.
Take care of yourselves and be safe as we press on through these winter months. I look forward to seeing all of you soon.
NYSCEA President 2013-15
